Athlete of the Month: Ken Conte

Ken Conte completed the New You Challenge at the beginning of the year with his wife, Tina. Tina came from a background in CrossFit and wanted to share this experience with her husband. Ken was committed to learn all the movements and would often go home to his wife telling her how excited he was to have done certain things in class. Upon the completion of the challenge, Ken and Tina went on a ski trip together and Tina could not believe how much better Ken was at skiing and also how much better he felt. Ken is a committed member at 6:30am and I tell him everyday how impressed I am with how far he has come. Ken is a prime example of how your health can be dramatically changed with commitment, consistency and the community at Crossfit East Coast.

1. What do you do for work?

Service Manager at Thorlabs, supporting laser based cell imaging instruments used in biomedical research. Have to spend a lot of time traveling and on the phone/computer. Not real active.

2. What would you like us to know about you and / or your family?

Happily married to Tina for almost 28 years. I am blessed to be the father of two great kids Beth (24) and Jon (17).

As the kids have gotten older, Tina and I spend more time together, skiing, golfing, hanging out and now Crossfit. She wanted to get back into it after a couple of years away from it.  She is the  reason I joined.

3. What is one thing that we may not know about you?

I really dislike travel (ironic since I do so much of it work), my favorite place is home. When I do travel for leisure I prefer winter ski trips out west.

4. How long have you been CrossFitting?

Started in the January 2017 Challenge Class.

5. What time do you typically train?

I am a morning person so when I am not on the road I am at the 6:30 am class.

6. What is your favorite CrossFit movement and why?

I prefer the front and back squats as it allows me to use my the bigger leg muscles.

7. What are your current CrossFit goals?

Overall to continue to improve my technique especially in the weight lifting disciplines, this is probably my weakest area. But my near term goal is to work on the rope climb, hate those rope pulls!

8. What are your current life goals?

To improve my over all health and fitness, stay active and be happy.

9. What is your favorite memory at CrossFit East Coast?

Would have to be last week when we were doing dead lifts, I had reached my PR at 205 but Patrick kept encouraging me to add more weight and before I knew it I was at 230.

10. How has CrossFit impacted your life outside of the box?

Overall I think I have a more positive self image. I feel better, lost a few pounds and even look a little better (that is what Tina says anyways).

11. How would you describe CrossFit East Coast to others?

It is an amazing  place to workout for people of all levels and abilities. The coaches here are fantastic!. For someone like me, coming in with absolutely no Crossfit or gym experience, I was amazed at how well each of the coaches worked with me and encouraged me to perform at my highest level.  The coaches really make this place special.

12. Is there anything else you’d like to add or share?

What really proved to me that Crossfit was working was when I was skiing out west after 5 weeks of the Challenge Class.  After skiing some steep stuff  the first day I had absolutely no leg muscle fatigue.  In fact I felt better with each passing day.  Must have been all those wall balls and squats!
